Meet Dawn & Mary

Kidney Disorder (Hydronephrosis)

“Grand Rounds did an excellent job of communicating with me—and everything moved incredibly fast. I got my information in a matter of days as opposed to weeks like I normally have waited.”

The Situation

Mary was born with hydronephrosis, a condition that creates excess liquid in the kidneys and is usually caused by obstruction of the channels between the kidney, ureter and bladder. In most children, the condition resolves on its own, but for Mary it had not. Mary's pediatric urologist strongly recommended to her mother, Dawn, that she undergo surgery to correct the problem. Dawn consulted with another physician who gave opposing advice—recommending against surgery in favor of continued monitoring of the situation.

Dawn now had two different treatment plans for her daughter and no clear methodology to know which plan was better. Not knowing whether to wait or rush to surgery, Dawn turned to Grand Rounds via her employer and used the service to get an Expert Opinion.

Why Dawn & Mary Went to Grand Rounds

Grand Rounds connected her to Dr. Adam Hittelman, an Assistant Professor of Urology and Pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine and an expert in hydronephrosis. Dr. Hittelman carefully reviewed Mary's medical history and was able to help her weigh her options and make an informed decision.

"It was really reassuring to know that he fully understood everything we'd been through. From other doctors, I never quite got enough information to know everything I needed in order to make the decision. He was able to explain things clearly for me; it was really helpful", says Dawn.

The Outcome

For the first time, Dawn had clarity on her daughter's situation. She was assured by Dr. Hittelman that there would be no long-term risks to forgoing surgery at this time. Helen opted to cancel the surgery.

"Grand Rounds did an excellent job of communicating with me—and everything moved incredibly fast. I got my information in a matter of days as opposed to weeks like I normally have waited. My care team was on top of the process and kept me updated every step of the way."
